This inscription was found in 1983 during deep soundings conducted under the Heroon III, a Roman-era peristyle structure in the city center of Milet (ancient Miletos), but its Carian character was only identified in 2003. The text is a graffito incised after firing on the underside of the base of a small Atticizing black-glazed bowl of 11.2 cm in diameter, likely a local Milesian product. It is the first and only Carian inscription found in Milet to date. The text is interpreted as a personal name. Based on its stratigraphic context and the form-typology of the vessel, the inscription is dated to the late 5th century or the first half of the 4th century BCE.
